Who is to blame for the Detroit Red Wings’ Game 7 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks?

Either step up or get out of the way Kronwall.

Either step up or get out of the way Kronwall.

It was an almost fitting ending to the Red Wings’ season. The defensive unit that spent the year getting harrassed broke down at the worst, and it wasn’t the worst player on that unit, but the best. You’ll see what I mean.

Allowed

1:08 2nd period. 1-0 Blackhawks

The Red Wings go for a change and the Blackhawks alertly take advantage of it. One outlet pass, two regular passes and Patrick Sharp scores. This falls on the changing defensemen, Niklas Kronwall and, in particular, Jonathan Ericsson, who was on the far side. Give some credit to the Blackhawks, though. They made a play. Responsibility: Niklas Kronwall (0.5), Jonathan Ericsson (0.5)

3:35 overtime. 2-1 Blackhawks.

Gustav Nyquist gets killed on the boards, giving up the puck, although it wasn’t really his fault. The Blackhawks. Brent Seabrook picks up the puck and walks into the zone. Dan Cleary gets lazy on the back check and reaches with his stick, allowing Seabrook into a one-on-one with Kronwall. I’ll let Mike Modano take over.

Kronwall does neither. The puck deflects off his stick and into the net. Game over. Series over. Let Chicago play their song. Responsibility: Niklas Kronwall (0.5), Dan Cleary (0.5)

Scored

0:26, 3rd period. 1-1, tied

Brendan Smith chips a puck towards the Blackhawks blue line. Cleary wins a mini race to the puck with Johnny Oduya and pokes it forward, where Nyquist picks up the puck. As the Chicago defenseman slides across, Nyquist uses some sick sauce to give it to Zetterberg who slaps it in. Responsibility: Dan Cleary (0.33), Gustav Nyquist (0.33), Henrik Zetterberg (0.33)

Your three non-stars:

  1. Oh what’s the point.
  2. It’s over.
  3. It’s really over.
